Making Rocky Outcrops
Rocky outcrops are simple to make and a nice variation to your hills. They provide excellent cover and look fabulous for they amount of effort they take.
What you need
- Foam - an old fruit box is perfect
- Water based paint - cheap kids stuff is great
- Modelling knife
or special foam cutter from games-workshop (easier but not needed)
- Flock
- PVA or craft glue
- Spray paint
Making the outcrop
We start by making a base as we would do with a hill.
Next take some offcuts of foam and shape them very roughly into some interesting rock shape.
Glue them where you wish on the base with some PVA and you end up with some crude looking terrain.

The secrect technique to making the rocks look cool is to use some spray paint! Anything cheap stuff will do. Spraying this onto the foam will eat into it before your eyes.

Looking at the above picture, you can see what I mean. How much the foam gets eaten depends on how much paint you spray on. It takes about 10 mins for the reaction to stop. Keep in mind if you spray too much on, you won't have much other than a blob of gooey paint and foam left!
Anyway, get your rocky base and give various parts a small spray of paint until you get an interesting formation. A bit more spray in some areas than in others. Too little is better than too much, as you can always come back and do it a bit more.

Let the spray reaction settle for a few hours, then you can go ahead and paint it - grey or brown, and the base like you would for a hill.
Flock the base and give the rock a drybrush of white of whatever color looks cool and you have an impressive looking piece of scenery.

Eating into foam this way really looks cool when painted and is so easy!
