Craters
Craters look cool on a war torn 40k battlefield, they can provide bunker-like defensive positions. They are really cheap to make.
What you need
- Styrofoam - an old fruit box is perfect
- Soldering iron or special foam cutter
- Water based paint - cheap kids stuff is great
Optional:
Making the crater
A basic crater is extremely easy to make, there's just a few tricks to make them look decent.
First things first. Warning: Try not to breath in the fumes when you're cutting the styrofoam, I'm certain they won't do you much good. You can use a modelling knife for the first part though.
Start by cutting out a styrofoam ring about an inch wide as large as you want the crater to be. If it's large enough, keep the inner leftover circle and you can make a smaller crater to go along with it.

Next try and get a basic crater shape to it. Don't make it too perfect.

The hardest part is to do the detailed shaping. Since styrofoam isn't exactly expensive, don't worry about screwing it up.
Try making various sections around the crater look like seperate jagged rocks, make them stick out at different heights and place compared to the others. Inbetween each, run the soldering iron down inbetween to give the crack an eroded look.

On the inside of the crate make the various V-shaped marks.
To make it look more rocky, and like an explosion has occured, melt in some horizontal lines going across the outside of the crater. Make some continue from one rock to the next and others randomly until it looks cool. Hopefully by this stage you should have something reasonable looking.

Painting
You can add some real rocks around if you wish then finish it off with some brown paints. Drybrushing will be picked up well by the jagged rocks.
You can paint on some watered down PVA around the base and dip in flock for some added realism.
The craters can be broken in pieces if you just want half craters.
